What is the difference between a quote and an order?

Short answer

A quote is an offer for the customer to review; an order records an agreed sale.

Both use the same OrderPilot record and editing screen. Create Quote and Create Order initially create Shopify draft orders.

Payment or Create order (pay later) places the Shopify order, so check the Shopify badge as well as the title.

What is the difference between options and order fields?

Options describe a product line and can add to its price; order fields collect information once for the whole quote or order. Fabric belongs on the Linden Sofa line, while Delivery floor belongs to the order.

Order fields never change the price. Options and order fields share one internal-name list, so each name can be used only once.

What is the difference between a template's Category and its Tax category?

Category is OrderPilot's grouping; Tax category is Shopify's product category for category-based tax rates. OrderPilot categories become Shopify product types and can carry warranty, terms, signature, deposit and commission rules.

Setting one does not set the other. Choose the template's Tax category separately in Organization.

What is the difference between the OrderPilot app and the POS extension?

OrderPilot in Shopify admin handles store setup and back-office work, while its Shopify POS tiles handle showroom sales. Both use the same quotes and orders. Staff can create quotes, take payments and deposits, collect signatures and print receipts on POS; Settings live in the app inside Shopify admin.

What's the difference between Explore only and Request a quote?

Explore only lets shoppers configure a product, see its price, and copy or share a design link without requesting a quote or buying. Request a quote lets them choose options without visible prices and add the product to the quote cart. They must then send the request for your team to receive it.
